CENTRAL INDIANA LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Licensing is at the discretion of the local municipality in the state of Indiana.
There is not a state heating and cooling license. Contact me regarding other Indiana Current License Requirements.
Types of Licenses
- Air Conditioning “A” – Unrestricted
- Air Conditioning “B” – 25 tons cooling/500,000 BTUs heating, boiler pressures not exceeding 15 psig steam and 30 psig water
- Air Conditioning “D” – 5 tons cooling/ 300,000 BTUs heating
- Refrigeration
- High Pressure

Minimum application requirements to go before the Board of Heating and Cooling Examiners:
The applicant must submit the following to the Board of Heating and Cooling Examiners at least ten (10) business days before the board meeting and the applicant’s name must be placed on the board agenda:
- Heating and Cooling exam application.
- Resume with work experience.
- Verification of employment documenting at least five (5) years of experience for a person in the HVACR trade by current and former employers. It must be verified on original letterhead stationery, including dates of employment (start and end dates), and a description of job responsibilities.
The five (5) years of experience can also be met with a combination of industry-related education and practical work experience. - At least three signed reference letters from individuals in the HVACR industry on company letterhead; for example, employers, wholesalers, suppliers, etc.
- Photocopy of EPA Certification(s) card.
- Photocopy of driver’s license.
- If applicable, copies of current licenses, certificates, and diplomas (relating to the heating and cooling industry). It is required by City Ordinance that the above six (7) items be submitted to the Board of Heating and Cooling Examiners for an applicant to be considered for approval to take the exam.
Application Process
- The applicant submits the application packet to the Board Coordinator at least ten (10) business days before the board meeting.
- Applicant appears before the Board of Heating and Cooling Examiners for an interview. The Board determines if the applicant meets the requirements to take the appropriate Prov exam.
- If approved, the applicant is given the information to work with Prov and sit for the exam.
- If the applicant scores 70% or higher on the Prov Inc. exam, the applicant reappears before the Board for orientation. After passing the exam, proof of surety bond, general liability insurance, and workmen’s compensation coverage must be submitted with proper fees and applications for the license. If the applicant holds a license in another jurisdiction that required the passage of the appropriate Prometric Inc. (formerly Thompson Prometric, Experior Assessments LLC, and Block & Associates) or Prov Inc. exam, the applicant may qualify for a reciprocal license.

INDIANAPOLIS AIR CONDITIONING “A” LICENSE

INDIANAPOLIS AIR CONDITIONING “B” LICENSE
PROV MARION COUNTY INDIANA
Allows the holder to install, repair, fabricate, alter or extend central air conditioning, heating and ventilating, including duct work within a complete system limited to 25 tons cooling and five hundred thousand (500,000) BTU heating (which does not utilize a water boiler in which the rated pressure exceeds (30) pounds per square inch, and all appurtenances, apparatus, piping vessels, ducts, and insulation used in conjunction with. All so includes refrigeration work up to 25 tons.

INDIANAPOLIS AIR CONDITIONING “D” LICENSE
PROV MARION COUNTY INDIANA
Allows the holder to install, repair, fabricate, alter or extend central air conditioning, heating and ventilating, including duct work. Systems shall be limited to single phase, five tons cooling capacity limited to (300,000) BTU input heating capacity and limited to boiler pressures of (15) pounds steam and (30) psig water.
